Yeah it pretty much rocked

OK fine. I’m going to jump in and agree that Pirates II was brilliant for porn. It raised another bar. It met the expectations and we all went home wishing we had been a part of it. It was such a big deal that single news sources published multiple articles on it in the same day. I’m going to join the feelings of the masses on the Jesse Jane/Belladonna scene as well. Give them the award now. Why drag it out.And good for Digital Playground. Hopefully they’ll make their money back ten fold. It is a business after all. But despite the fact that they did this for the money and not as a charitable act towards the rest of the industry this movie has done us all a lot of good. It’s bridging the gap between mainstream and triple x. It’s going to make a huge chunk of an otherwise oblivious population aware of what porn can be and why they need it. It’s going to create customers and new places to market adult product. It’s chipping away at the convenient undefined taboo surrounding the industry.

These kind of big budgets are good for the continued freedom to create them as well. They can show value outside of the immediate effect of getting a dick hard. Not that there is anything wrong with getting a dick hard. I personally strive for it everyday. But in a courthouse Pirates II would be a love letter to this industry where a Max Hardcore film would further threaten it.

And don’t forget that it answered a lot of questions about what to do with piracy and declining DVD sales: Make something that people want on DVD again. This isn’t a movie that you want for just one of the scenes (except maybe the Jesse/Belladonna one). This is a movie that you want for all of the disks and extended scenes and BTS and don’t forget the plot. Because there is one and it takes a turn or two and I’m going to be honest the giant worm made me jump. If I wasn’t supposed to mention the giant worm I’m apologizing ahead of time. This is the kind of movie that doesn’t make you reach for fast forward button during dialogue. In fact it may go the opposite way and make you reach for the fast forward button during sex instead. It’s the kind that leaves you searching for the release date for Pirates III because fuck if there weren’t a lot of ways this story can go now. And please DP, bring back Katsumi because she’s damn good.

Ok I don’t want to run on because I have to be up for a shoot early tomorrow but I think this movie will also reach a previously uninterested female audience. I think they will only get better in time and who knows, maybe the real money can one day be made with mainstream quality because we can count box office sales. Profits would grow exponentially if big budget features were consistently of a quality that they could be released in theaters with an R or even an X rating. And it becomes a cycle where an ever increasing percentage of the population starts realizing that porn isn’t all bad and maybe they even like it. Maybe they even like it enough to pay for it.

All in all I’m really digging the plot-driven porn. Adam and Eve gave me the lead in their big budget, “The 8th Day,” and I think it will appeal to the same kind of audience that Pirates is aiming for: a huge one. In my opinion these are the best projects for all involved. They have the highest potential for return, they’re healthy for the industry, and they are fun as hell.

So to sum it up: congratulations Digital Playground.

…and don’t forget “The 8th Day” releases in the spring of ’09 through Adam and Eve pictures.

  1. A movie about pirates – romanticized thieves – that “pretty much rocks” is going to cut down on piracy? I don’t get it. Isn’t that kind of like fucking for virginity? Or, exactly like it?
