No offense to those I work with currently, but I have been in the employ of AVN for almost 5 years. In that time, I have never seen someone with the
sheer brass balls and backbone that Tim has. I am grateful to have him at the helm, and have no clue where we would have wandered under some of the previous managing editors. I shudder to think of the peril this industry would be in, had this crisis happened at the time I started.
I honestly feel that for the first time, the mainstream news is taking this publication, and our industry seriously. I also feel Tim has a lot to do with that. He has a clear idea of where this publication needs to be, and the direction of where it needs to go. It is why Paul brought him on board, and why we have been looking better since.
Those with brass balls and back bone are not necessarily the most popular. However, at times like these, brass balls and back bone are needed most.

Is “Nero” Fiddling While Rome Burns:
Today the California legislature will vote on a bill that will require testing every two weeks and will bar performers with any STD from working in the industry. That includes performers with Herpes. Over half the people currently in porn have Herpes. If this bill passes and is signed into law by the governator many pornchicks and meat puppets will become unhireable. More legislation, including condom mandates are on the horizon.
I do not believe that government regulation is the answer but apparently porns elite must, because nobody is attempting to do anything about it. Even the FSC, which is suppossed to be lobbying in Sacramento right about now hasn’t said a word about what they might be doing to head this off at the pass.
What we need is competent leadership, when this business started to mainstream a couple of years ago it seems that everyone suddenly became proof of the Peter Principle, that every person will rise to his/her level of incompetence. Sadly this has become crystal clear during these trying times.
From AIM to the very beacon of the adult industry AVN, it seems that nobody has any clear and thought out ideas about how to ride out this storm. At this point pretty much everyone knows that AIM is a sitting duck. AIM created a house of cards and it collapsed on itself when it became clear that there was no contingency plan, something that should have been thought out, approved and implemented a long time ago. It was, in fact, one of AIMs two most important functions. Add to that the fact that AIM has handled this in a grossly incompetent manner from day one and AVN has propped them up every step of the way and its obvious that nobody knows what the hell they are doing.
Has anyone other than me even offered a rudimentary plan to salvage AIM? It appears to me that the powers that be are simply “fiddling”
Testing, Condoms, and Talent Unions:
What do all of these have in common? Alone none of them have a prayer of working. Propped up by the government, they could all become law and moving out of California won’t help, nor will importation, allow me to offer some answers to your ideas about how to circumvent any of this.
Now lets suppose that Cal OSHA or L.A County or whomever else decides that we have to test every two weeks and we have to use condoms when we shoot. Simple you say…I will just shoot in Nevada. AHEM! OSHA is national, it won’t help to shoot in Nevada, and has it occurred to you that Nevada already has health care laws for legal prostitution? Do you really think they won’t immediately apply these to porn shooting there? Yes Condoms are mandatory for legal prostitutes in Nevada.
Fine you say, we will import product from elsewhere. Ever heard of tarriffs? Yep the government can place a heavy tax on imported porn, do you think they wouldn’t dare? Do you think that you will have the same clout to fight these tariffs on either end that the auto makers have?
But here comes the REAL kicker, yep the talent union. You see…what happens when California says that you have to have a state permit to perform in adult movies. AND that manufacturers must have everyones permits on file for every movie. Now this gets interesting. Now the Talent Union can really work because you have the state making laws that would essentially prop it up. Do you want me to spell out where it goes from here?
