MIAMI, Florida (AP) — A floating vintage car chugging toward the Florida Keys from Cuba was piloted by two of the same men who tried to sail a converted truck to the United States last year, relatives said.

Marciel Basanta Lopez and Luis Gras Rodriguez, who were brought back to Cuba after they failed to reach Florida in a converted 1951 Chevy pickup in July, were allegedly at the helm of the newest vehicle-boat conversion.

The U.S. Coast Guard would not confirm the status of the tailfinned 1950s car.

Relatives told Basanta’s cousin, Kiriat Lopez, who lives in Florida, that they knew the men were planning a second escape attempt.

“My cousin isn’t crazy. He wants to be free,” Lopez said. “That’s how crazy he is.”

This made me think about the fact that these people continue to risk their lives in a quest to be free.

Freedom.

It is the same principle on which the founding fathers established this country. It is the same principle for which millions have fought and died. Yet there are all to many people in this country who would lay their freedom at the feet of the politicians in exchange for security.

Take a look, it is all around you. The second amendment prevents government from interfering with our right to bear arms, yet gun control is ubiquitous, all in the name of keeping us “safe”. It isn’t necessary they say the government can keep you safe, you don’t need guns, they have only one purpose and that is to kill. Who will protect us from the government?

The Orwellian named Patriot Act, in the name of defending us from terrorism is taking government control to new levels, the government now has the power to hold you without a trial, to impound your money and assets without due process, and to use your private information against you with no search warrant or even probable cause. The ink wasn’t dry on this before John Ashcroft, our Attorney General was using the provisions to prosecute a strip club owner in Las Vegas, who had no connections whatsoever to any terrorist organizations nor was he even suspected of it.

In the past our liberties were attacked in the name of the war on drugs, for example theres the little known law that allows police to confiscate all of your cash if you are carrying more than 10,000 dollars. And then you have to prove you weren’t trafficking in drugs to get it back. Think I am kidding? I am not and it has been used many times.

Did you know that every time you make a cash deposit or withdrawal from your bank account that is 10,000 dollars or more that transaction is reported to the federal government?

Yet these Cuban families are risking drowning, exposure, sharks, Cuban Militia and other hazards so that they might come here to live as free men and women, all the while people in this country are more than willing lay their freedom aside and lick the boot of the imperial federal government.

Who do you think deserves their freedom more?
