A 40-year-old Beloit, Wisconsin woman accused of filming her roommate having sex and then posting the videos on social media takes a plea deal in Rock County Circuit Court.
Judge Karl Hansen accepted a no contest plea from Nicole Owens on a misdemeanor charge of publishing an intimate depiction of a person without consent. A felony charge of capturing an intimate representation without consent was dismissed but considered at sentencing in the revenge porn case.
According to the criminal complaint, Owens had cameras set up in her living room and recorded the victim having intercourse.
Owens told police she thought could put whatever she wanted on the internet, and she posted the videos because she was mad at the victim.
The complaint says she told an officer she didn’t know it was illegal and thought Facebook would remove it if it was illegal.
Wisconsin criminalized ‘revenge porn’ in 2014. The act of vengefully publishing sexually explicit images without the permission of their subjects is punishable by up to $10,000 in fines and as many as nine months in jail.
Hanson sentenced the Beloit woman to 40 hours of community service and ordered her to pay an $800 fine.
