On June 1, 2023, the trans community was rocked by the tragic death of popular performer, Kayla Moon (Asia Davis). The 34–year–old was shot and killed at a Highland Park hotel in Michigan. To date, no suspects have been arrested.
The tragedy of Kayla Moon aka Asia Davis death
Michigan Police believe that Davis was shot in a Highland Park, Michigan hotel. Residents of the city’s transgender community were concerned by the news. Although the cause of death is still pending an autopsy, Kayla’s mother and longtime friend Allona Anderson, expressed shock and grief. Julisa Abad, a victim advocate with Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, noted that violence against transgender women of color is unfortunately common. The death of Kayla Moon Asia Davis brings the issue to the forefront.
The rate of trans people being murdered by violence, especially those of trans women of color, continues to increase. In the last 12 months alone, Chastity Cheeks and Kandii Redd were both slain.
Most importantly, the anti–trans rhetoric, anti–trans laws, and the viciousness of the media should absorb some responsibility for this. Kayla Moon first appeared as a performer in 2012 and returned in 2021 with a new look. Kayla quickly became one of the most requested trans-black models.
The story of Kayla Moon is one that tragically ended far too soon.
Appearing in solo and partnered shoots. Her sets were highly popular. Furthermore, Investigators are not able to provide family members with solid information about her death. The opportunity to donate to charity in her honor is underway by family members. The trans community is now facing a heartbreaking reality – trans deaths by violence are increasing. We must come together to bring an end to this senseless violence.
