Mike, I respect your concerns about prostitution in our business. As you know we share the same thoughts on the risks on set of such practice. However, my concern as you again know, is about professionalism and not about prostitution or, even less, escorting per-se.
Escorting is legal. Prostitution is not, but in my opinion it should be, or otherwise let’s stop the hypocrisy about women freedom, bla bla bla.
On top of that, prostitution in porn valley is not a thing of the last few years: it always existed. Without naming anybody, I personally know at least 8 hall of fame girls from the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s who have earned money from prostitution at some point throughout their career. There were less chances to become visible about it, the girls were surely more discreet (and absolutely more professional) and most of all the media that exist today weren’t existing back then. But prostitution in the adult industry has always existed among the top girls (and boys, if you want me to tell it all). Maybe, by making it finally legal we could regulate it and avoid that some stupid performers fuck on set a few hours later they have fucked off set untested partners, either due to prostitution or to personal needs. This is the problem, not prostitution. Girls fuck without protection a stranger known in the disco and then in the morning they show up on a set waving their 2 weeks old negative test. Too sad that the deterrent is there, but that everybody remains deaf about it: rapid test on set, you remember? Just a deterrent of course, but a strong one. Certainly stronger than total lack of prostitution (which is impossible to achieve, by the way).

I dont disagree with a word you wrote and i think prostitution should be legal as well. My point here is that as an industry something is off kilter here. When pretty much every girl in the biz has to turn to prostitution to maintain her livelihood then as an industry we are seriously failing.

I read a NYT article last month about the rescue of some worker’s on the other side of the world being tricked into sex work. They basically were kept like animals in a coop, and beaten and drugged in between their scheduled prostitution times. It was a tear jerker. A woman had a narrow escape, crawling out of the bathroom window to escape to a street naked, and she went from place to place begging for help. A cop laughed her off, in the police station. She had to find a grey man (one who was in the business, but was sympathetic enough to rescue some girls out) and finally she was able to gain her freedom. A law enforcement guy at the end asks her “are you ready to go back?”. She was like, “for what?” and the guy was like a cowboy, “to go get your friends” and they rescued all those girls in that hell hole. But these were women who were tricked with newspaper ads or online postings about what they thought were legitimate work, people who travel abroad to work for a few months and go back home to share the money with their family.
Not sure if the gov’t agencies would be interested in this, because it’s so popular to say and blame girls who start in porn and end up escorting because “they brought it on themselves” (personally I disagree with that line of thinking, and I think it’s bullshit, but whatever).
Now if you could get a bunch of people together and shut down a criminal front that is abusing girls, willing to write it down on paper willing to take that risk, it’d be a different story I’m sure. Unless you can get more proof that might be interested in that sort of thing. That’s just a guess on my part.
For me it always comes back to human rights. People just want to live a decent life, and make good money (and the value of that, varies) and to be happy. Now, when someone willingly abuses someone else, in order to control them or cause them unhappiness or pain, that pisses me off. Sex work is never gonna go away. I agree that legal prostitution will only help people that choose to do it. And Mike I think your right, the big difference is here do these ladies ACTUALLY want to prostitute themselves or are they doing because they are that hard up for cash? And are they being forced to get in, or stay? These are the questions that I’d want to know. And take out a business, another one is going to move in, then what? How does one get rid of the scumbags while keeping the others safe enough to do business? I don’t know any of the answers, but maybe this line of thinking can help ya, I dunno.

I also think prostitution should be legal but it should be regulated with all johns and prostitutes required to take a porn panel VD test within two weeks of hiring a prostitute and be able to prove it on some restricted database as well as show the paperwork from the lab proving he/she is negative for VD. If the john (or prostitute) wishes to use a condom (with appropriate lube) it should be required that the prostitute (or john) allow it. Preferably prostitutes would not be allowed to stand on street corners to attempt to get work but either go to the john’s home/hotel room after he/she arranges for service through an agency or the prostitute/agency provide a facility for the act to take place (similar to Dennis Hof’s houses of prostitution in Nevada today).

You make a good point, Silas. Also, a john takes less time than a porn scene. Two johns a night (about two and a half hours work) pays the same as a porn scene (about $1000-$1700 at the high-end porn producers), a well known porn performer can make $500-$750 fucking each john after agency fees — fucking one john an hour whereas a porn scene takes a minimum of four hours with makeup, scene discussion, pretty girls (still pictures) and filming the actual scene — and that is if the prior scene of the day doesn’t go into overtime and she ends up sitting around waiting to work. A couple of things on this:
First, the industry will never be safe if the performers are having unprotected sex with untested clients outside of the business. It’s a gimmie.
Second, I don’t think of porn as a gateway to prostitution, I think of prostitution as the natural progression for girls (and guys) who are willing to fuck for money. Having a camera, a producer, and a sound guy in the room is the only real difference here – otherwise, you are getting paid to fuck one way or another.
Third, I also think it’s a natural situation for girls (and guys) who have already accepted the idea that they can fuck for money. If you get paid $800 for a scene and then pay agent fees and the like, or you can fuck some random dude in a hotel room for an hour for a $1000 or more cash in your pocket, it’s pretty much a no brainer situation. Not to mention of course that the prostitution sex is likely shorter, less painful, involves guys with tiny peens, and generally isn’t as hard as getting fucked on camera.
Fourth, unless a porn girl is really uniquely talented, it’s unlikely she has another job outside of porn. With the porn world getting to be less and less lucrative, it’s not unusual to see the girls using their one god given talent (they can suck and fuck) to earn a living. Once you are use to making thousands a week taking cock, it’s insanely hard to go back to the McJob you are qualified for with a couple of hundred take home pay.
Finally, I think that prostitution should be entirely legalized. Not street meat stuff, but the escort aka fucking for money situation is clean, out of the public eye, and generally keeps a low enough profile as to not be a menace to society. I seem to remember you and I having a very similar discussion a decade ago, so this is nothing new.
Sex work is sex work, so it *really* isn’t all that shocking that even high-profile adult performers simultaneously escort. And for good or ill, the age of porn superstars is over and has been since the market saturation of the mid 2000’s. All that said, porn is *not* a front for prostitution, it’s merely one platform among many in a sex industry that’s changed drastically since the late 1990’s.

Done right and with the cooperation of producers – and I doubt they can do it right – a performers union could address one issue, which is the saturation of talent. One of the byproducts of unions in mainstream is that there is not a saturation of talent because you can’t work unless you’re a member of the union. A producer can’t just hire some young hack writer who is willing to write a blockbuster for 50 grand rather than the 3 million you’d pay an experienced screenwriter.
That said, the porn consumer thrives on variety. You know the old saying: Behind every beautiful woman, there’s a guy whose tired of screwing her? Prostitution and porn star escorts are not the same thing. Girls working the street as prostitutes are in a very dangerous profession. Many are forced into the job and have no way out. They are addicted to drugs and have to turn tricks to pay their pimp as well as their habit. There is always an angry pimp working hard to keep his stable of girls in line. Lets also not forget that street hookers are the #1 target of serial killers.
