I’m sitting here scrolling through Twitter on my iPhone, and I have a tinyurl link to a photo of Belladonna’s asshole in my Twitter feed immediately followed by a CNN link to a news story about debt ceiling bullshit. I didn’t have to venture into some hot pink conspicuous porn site that my co-workers might catch me viewing in order to see Belladonna’s asshole. I didn’t have to incur a fee on my cable TV bill to view this photo either. I saw the photo on the same exact information feed where I get news about which stocks to buy, receive messages from my mother, and learn about the latest short sale homes for sale in my area. Unlike any other mainstream platform before it, Twitter has given porn top tier inclusion into their realtime worldwide flow of information. And it’s free.
What does a Twitter / Porn partnership mean for this industry? Beyond the ability to instantly communicate a free marketing message to fans and consumers around the world where they eat, sleep, and breathe online, there is no longer a need for middleman third party carnival barkers like AVN. I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether or not that’s a good thing.
Twitter currently has over 1 billion search queries per day. That’s more than Yahoo and Bing combined. It’s also being projected by the year 2013 that over 11% of the adult U.S. population will be utilizing Twitter on a daily basis for news, information, and entertainment. That’s not 11% of adult online users. That’s 11% of the entire adult population of this country. More than any other media or broadcast network.
I’ve never been the type of person to “believe the hype”. I can’t stand fucking hype. But I see the writing on the wall with my own eyes. Even though the consumer porn marketplace is in the shitter, there are Twitter porn success stories out there. There are people in this industry who have made social media an integral part of their business and it’s paying off. I will spotlight a few of these business models later this week.
