Anatomy of a Porn Industry Release Party

I’ve been to exactly two porn industry parties in my short porno career as I continue my bi-polar money grab jumping back and forth between mainstream and adult. Both of these porn parties were billed as “movie release parties”, but I don’t remember anyone in attendance ever giving a flying fuck about who or what was being released. There weren’t any retailers invited, and the few fans that showed up at the door got berated as “fan boys” and were treated with less enthusiasm than a Kurt Lockwood keynote address at a Valtrex convention.

Outside of a bunch of industry insiders just hanging out and having a good time, the only people who truly benefited from these parties were the sleazy promoters/club owners who charged 30 bucks a head to get in for the opportunity to stand in line at the bar for another 20 minutes and buy a $7 dollar bottle of Heineken.

At least with mainstream industry parties, you have Entertainment Tonight type correspondents documenting the event for television, as well as a mountain of international photographers shooting images that get published all around the world. No one who attends a porno release party ever buys a copy of the movie, and beyond the truly fantastic Gia Jordan snapping some shots, the adult press corps is limited to 1 or 2 fat guys with backwards baseball hats hoping to get a flash of a tit to post on their blogs.

In the end, I think the whole release party thing is about “playing Hollywood” and feeling important rather than gaining any kind of significant promotional value. Yet week after week the party press releases and invites keep flying around town promoting these events while the only people making any money on these things are outside the industry.

  1. Poor Stevie’s caught between two worlds, mainstream and adult; golly, he’s in a terrible pickle.

At least he can take solace about his chosen place in adult from Monty Python’s “The Meaning Of Life” — in song!

“Cause you see I feel that life’s a game.
    You sometimes win or lose.
And though I may be down right now –
at least I don’t work for Jews”

Have a few seven dollar beers and all will be right in the world, everyone in his place … even little Stevie Lick, who don’t like the Jews.

  2. Well I agree with Steve it isn’t a release party to benefit the movie in any way it’s a way for the promoters to make some fat cash. Course if you know that going in and you still go…well God bless ya.

BUT REAL release parties have open bars, finger foods, press and the people are there to promote the release, doing interviews, signing things yada yada.

  3. That’s why All Media Play/X-Play no longer throws any parties. Too many lousy parties by too many promoters killed a fun time and that is what should result from any party- FUN.

It was like the boy that cried wolf one too many times with every weekend hosting “the biggest porn party ever”. Such bullshit I have to laugh.

We will throw a fun porn party sometime in the fall which will be big, fun and old school in every way for the release of our Not Bewitched XXX and Not the Bradys XXX Marcia Marcia Marcia releases.

Those who have been to some of our big All Media Play/SexZ Pictures parties know what is coming but I agree the good times have been ruined just a bit. Not Bewitched XXX in stores September 23rd starring Jenna Haze, Teagan, Eva Angelina, Sasha Grey, Sunny Lane, Aurora Snow and many more.
