Causes for Female Sexual Dysfunction

Sexual dysfunction is defined as ‘a problem that interferes with the sexual response process; preventing or inhibiting one or both partners from experiencing pleasure.’

This is something that will affect most people’s lives at some stage. It’s also a very…sensitive topic; most people who have difficulties with sex are embarrassed to discuss those difficulties. Statistically-speaking, around 43% of women and 31% of men will experience some form of sexual dysfunction. Now, I have discussed this particular issue in relation to men a few times but what about women?

If the statistical data says that 43% of women experience some form of sexual dysfunction, what is the cause? Let’s find out, shall we?

Physical Causes

There are a variety of physical problems which may contribute to/cause someone to experience a sexual dysfunction. These may vary in terms of severity but a few common ones are:

  1. Health Disorders/Problems. In order to have a healthy sex life, one should strive to stay physically healthy. Problems with your heart, kidneys, and liver can cause serious problems. If you have a neurological problem, that can also contribute to your dysfunction. Certain medications have some side-effects which may affect arousal or performance.
  2. Substance abuse. This is a serious problem in the world today and it has serious repercussions for your sex life. Alcohol and drug abuse can lead to the failure of certain internal organs (i.e. the kidneys and liver). It can also lead to heart problems which can get very serious very quickly.
  3. This is a…delicate subject but sexual trauma causes both physical and psychological damage. This may lead to issues with desire and performance.

Mental Causes

Causes for Female Sexual Dysfunction

When it comes to sources for sexual dysfunction(s), the mental state of an individual can have a major impact on their sexual lives. Much like with physical causes, there are a variety of psychological causes for sexual dysfunctions in women. The most common ones are:

  1. This is a very delicate topic in general; depression has a variety of sources and can vary in terms of severity. It can stem from feelings of guilt or sadness and these negative emotions can and do affect your sexual response(s).
  2. Performance Anxiety. A common cause for dysfunctions, performance anxiety stems from the concern that either you or your partner won’t enjoy the experience. This can lead to some rather…disappointing encounters.
  3. Relationship Problems. Having issues with your significant other is most definitely going to impact your sex life. These problems, whatever they may be, should be addressed quickly and calmly so that you can go back to your regular lives.
  4. Various forms of Stress including PTSD from prior sexual trauma. Let’s face it, if you’re stressed out about anything the odds are that you’re probably not going to be that enthusiastic about sex. This is particularly true in cases where you’re reliving a past trauma.

In Conclusion

Whether they’re caused by physical or mental stimuli, the fact of the matter is: sexual dysfunctions will happen. As you get older, they may become more frequent or severe but it’s also important to understand that sexual dysfunction is treatable. Medication such as Lovegra has been shown to work with many women. With that in mind, if this is something that worries you; see a doctor and get some professional help.
