Don’t Just Be Careful, Be Specific

I was hanging out with my good friend Jane Hamilton, a.k.a. Veronica Hart, this past Sunday, and we were talking about the power of wanting. I have gotten everything in life that I really wanted, but after years of closing my eyes and opening my heart and mind and releasing my wishes to the world around me, I have learned it’s important to be very specific.

Janie gave me a present. A little “wish” figurine, and the idea is that you write down what you want and then place it under the figurine and eventually your wish comes true. It’s very smart, really, because passing thoughts happen all the time, but it forces one to give more than a passing thought to just randomly wanting something, it forces one to really think about it, and the extra effort of writing it down reinforces the energy started by just thinking about it. This is how materializing the things we want happens. This is what those films “The Secret” and “What The Bleep Do We Know?” are about.

I’ve been doing this for years – meditating on the things I want in very deliberate ways and then writing them down over and over again. I couldn’t list everything in one blog post, but I’ve traveled to the places I wanted to travel around the world, I’ve seen things I wanted to see, and I’ve wished for things for loved ones, as well, and seen those things happen.

As Janie handed me the figurine she said, “It’s not enough to write down what you want, you must be very specific.” I laughed. “Don’t I know! I have made a practice of very specific wishes in the last five years, and the main thing I’ve learned is to always add an extra line at the end, ‘And I don’t want anyone to get hurt to make it happen.'” She smiled because, naturally, she knows what I’m talking about.

The power of the mind is pretty awesome. I had a friend cry on the phone to me once, “I was so mad as he drove away I yelled, ‘I hope you get into a car accident!’ And he did!” It is important to be careful what you wish for because the universe is designed to satisfy any need we could possibly have. We can’t want anything too outrageous because our mind can’t think beyond what is actually possible. Space travel was once just a fanstasy and then somone, and then many someones desired to make it happen. If you can conceive of it, it is possible. If you’re like me your deepest wishes are pretty practical. I’d love to travel in outer space, but I’d much rather live in France, so I keep my wishes pretty close to the ground. The point is, once you think about it and are certain you want that something, the world conspires to give it to you, as it conspires to give others what they want, as well. I guess what I’m really trying to stress here is that everyone can have the things they want without hurting anyone to get it, and I think that kind of specific thought when dreaming and hoping and praying – whatever you call what you do when you ask for something – is just as important as making sure you concentrate on making your wishes come true. I don’t know about “good” and “evil”, I just know that wanting the best for yourself and others will probably add an element of satisfaction to the fruition of your happinesses that might not otherwise be there if you want something without thinking about the consequences that occur when you’re not very specific. That’s where the saying “Be careful what you wish for” comes from. Forget careful! That kind of word inspires fear. I say be specific! I want to live in France. I want to, happily, make a living as a writer. I want to enjoy my life. And I don’t want anyone to get hurt to make it happen. 🙂

  1. ugh, I wish I wasn’t so vague and open ended on what I actually desire – if I could be more specific I’d probably be much further along.
