5 Reasons Why I Am in the Adult Industry
The incongruency of growing up in the southeastern region of the US and working in the adult entertainment industry for the past 9 years has obviously cooked up a heaping serving of negative judgement and just plain confusion amongst my family, friends, the families of friends and everyone who ever knew me when I was a sweet little girl and “what happened?”. I’m not going to pretend that I’m some kind of unique case; TONS of people who work in the adult industry come from the south and small towns. I come from the rather large city of Atlanta, which is kind of the liberal island in the middle of the south, so this isn’t the story you think it is. Rather, I’m seeking to clear up some confusion, because I do believe that MUCH of the negativity stems from a massive amount of ignorance on so many levels (and please understand that the word “ignorance” has taken on a negative connotation for some reason, but really it just means “a lack of knowledge”). So here it is, Cracked-style, 5 reasons I am in the adult industry.
1. Working for myself.
Yes, I perhaps could have opened up my own flower service. Or become a professional panhandler. Either way, for as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to work for myself. I NEVER considered that this would mean becoming a model or a pornstar or a video producer, but I was always interested in acting and videography and people always told me that I was pretty, so when I was floating through college with no major and delivering pizzas and a very intelligent friend put the idea in my head about a sector of the adult industry that he thought would be a good fit for me, after much consideration, I made the decision to go for it. It sounded like fun and maybe I could make enough money to stop punching in hours for another company and earn it as a direct result of something I created. If someone had suggested the flower thing to me and I had felt that it would be lucrative, I might have gone with that.
2. Relatively low barriers to entry. But not in the way you think.
A common misconception is that it’s EASY to be successful in the adult entertainment industry. If you’re a hot girl and willing, you’ll have no problem becoming a millionaire. Maybe in 1965. In 2015, the adult industry is much how I imagine the mainstream entertainment industry USED to be. There are THOUSANDS of beautiful, willing models and HUNDREDS of legit video production companies. On top of that, most consumers of the material have never even CONSIDERED actually paying for it because it’s free all over the internet. So producers try shooting niches. However, now the niches have subniches that the general population wouldn’t even recognize as pornographic material. These random videos of girls freaking out aloud about a magical spell turning them into a cow or getting their feet stuck in a pool of melted jellybeans aren’t available for free and therefore still sell among a targeted audience.
The point I’m trying to make is that it’s hard out here for a pimp. BUT if you are pretty AND have a brain, you’re not going to be letting an actual pimp run your shit and take all your money and steer you in terrible directions. SO the barriers to entry into the adult industry are actually NOT as difficult as alot of other industries IF you know what you’re doing. I learned and am still learning along the way.
3. Freedom from the 9-5.
As with most self-employed persons, I don’t have to be at a certain location at a certain time 5 days a week. I do so many different things, so I can be working on my computer at 3am or shooting at 9pm. For the most part, I make my OWN schedule. This allows me the freedom to live wherever I want, travel whenever I want or even travel 24/7 and live in a van, which is what I’ve been doing since last year. That being said, living in places where most porn is being shot like Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Florida is a GOOD idea, but certainly not a necessity. I visit these places often (whether I like it or not :P) do some work and then drive off to wherever the fuck I want. And I can still do more work on my laptop if I want. I’ll explain all the different kinds of work I do in the next paragraph…
4. Variety of work.
I’m not just fucking people for money. Here is a list of ALL the different things I do and what many models HAVE to do these days in order to make enough money to live off of and not have to get a side job at Dennys. Personally, it’s nice to not do the same thing all the time.
-Shooting videos for my own company. This consists of hiring models (or modeling myself), having good equipment and knowing how to use it, finding locations, knowing what to shoot and how to shoot it.
-Editing and posting my videos online. Post-production, which can be done anywhere (except next to an old lady at Starbucks).
-Shooting custom videos. Customers/fans will order a SPECIFIC video they want produced (the model, the scenario, the fetishes performed) and pay a pretty penny for them. Sometimes they are easy, sometimes they are 50 pages long and detailed and English is not their first language.
– Shooting videos for OTHER companies. This may involve that sex part that got you all hot and bothered but it may also involve non-sex, softcore fetish work.
– Phone Sex. I am signed up under 3 different companies so that I may receive calls on a per minute basis from fans who want to talk about their fetishes or their favorite color or anything else in between.
– Cam Shows. I never got HUGE into this sector, but I do accept private video shows from fans who ask and prepay via my own payment processor.
-Sessions. I do in-person NON-NUDE sessions that involve fetish or wrestling acts; usually it consists of me tying someone down and tickling them or them licking my feet for an hour.
-Social Networking. It is essential to spend time on Twitter/Facebook/Instagram in order to connect with fans and market yourself. Obviously no one is getting paid for these efforts, it’s just something you do.
-DVDs. Lately I have been turning all my clips into actual full-length DVD movies, so I’ve had to have covers made and have been re-rendering and encoding my files for DVD.
-Uploading videos. I feel like this is what I spend most of my time doing. And since I am on the road, it isn’t as easy as someone who lives in a house with a constant internet connection.
Am I boring you yet? Good. Maybe now you understand that the having sex with strangers part of my job is just that, a PART. And in my case, it wasn’t even a part of my job until a few years ago. Which brings me to the final reason I am in the adult industry
5.The Sex Part.
I think everyone can agree that sex is fun. For me, sex is USUALLY something that I only want to share with the person I am with. Which is why I’m lucky that my boyfriend is also a porn performer and I’ve been able to shoot with him for a large number of my scenes. But yes, it’s fun to perform with other people sometimes, as well. That being said, I am actually NOT an exhibitionist; I don’t crave attention, but I have always enjoyed performing. Sex (at least good sex) feels artistic to me and I strive to let that come across on film. What it doesn’t feel like is REAL sex, whether it’s with my boyfriend or not. And that’s because it’s NOT! PORN is usually male-centric, brightly lit sex at 9 in the morning where you have to wear HUGE fake eyelashes and hold your butt cheeks up and out of the way. There is very little, if any, kissing and oral on the girl is often not even a part of it. And then they pour white creamy face wash on your face and take pictures. Ta da! It’s a JOB and not a bad one; $1000 for a few hours of work. And in case you didn’t know, we get STD tested for EVERYTHING every TWO weeks now for a whopping $150-200/pop and yes, we have to pay for it ourselves.
So there you have it. Like any job, there are positives and negatives. And as with any job of self-employment, you have to think of your future because nobody is putting anything into a 401K for you or providing you with health insurance, so those things ARE your own responsibility. However, my roles in the adult industry suit the lifestyle I want to live and I am grateful to have discovered this unique world.

Great article except for one GLARING error. You DO NOT get teste for everything,,,the industry Harm Reduction Program, which I assisted AIM in actually putting down on paper, does not include oral or anal testing for the gonnorhea and chlamydia.
Addie, did you know that your g/c test will NOT detect either of these diseased in your throat or anus? Have you seen the studies done with porn stars that show how many std’s are missed because they dont test oral or anal sites. As usual I don’t agree, Common. From what she has written I think Addie sounds intelligent and has her head screwed on reasonably straight which I cannot say about everyone in this industry. Don’t knock her for not knowing that VD testing can be done in all of the pussy, ass and mouth (actually they can test for herpes in the eye as well) — they don’t usually teach that in school and most doctors don’t think to test there unless requested to or if symptoms are coming from those areas.
Also, according to IAFD she is also known as Mistress Addie which means she is into BDSM. There is a lot that can be done in that genre without penetration or even oral sex. Caning, whipping, bondage, kidnapping/cop and perp play, tease and denial, foot play, verbal domination — the list and combinations are just about endless and almost none of it requires penetration. The chance of getting VD from tying hands and caning asses is almost nil if there isn’t penetration involved. jw, did you know that it is illegal for a private physician to charge YOU more for lab work than he pays the lab. If the physician collects payment at time of sevice on behalf of the laboratory performing the test, he cannot make a profit off the tests,,,,He can charge you for an office visit, but you have to be seen by someone with a certain level(not quite sure what that is these days) most likely a PA(Physicians assistance), and you must be billed seperately for the visit and the lab tests. AIM got away with itpartly because they were a non profit, but mostly because I didnt care becuase they were paying the bills on time. Then they ripped me off for, well actually ripped performers off for $650,000,oo. Lets just leave it right here for now or better yet leave it in a luxury suite in Beliz with the rest of you and other performers money. I never want to come off as a hater, sound superior (well, OK, sometimes) or belittle performers, but, when I read in the post my first thought was: Who the hell is Addie Juniper.
When I read that she lives in her van, I thought: Well, this is good. She’s preparing herself for a life after porn. At some point, she’ll be too old to perform, she’ll lose interest, or the porn viewing public will lose interest in her – all of which happens to every performer, including Jenna Jameson.
The last thought, which I find most interesting or disturbing, is this trend among the really young and seemingly bright performers, like Belle Knox, to delude themselves into thinking that doing porn is empowering them as entrepreneurs and women. It all sounds great late at night in a dorm after a few too many beers, but, it just isn’t the real world.
You just hope these gals, who seem bright and articulate, are bright enough to sock away every dime possible because they’re going to need when their porn careers are over – which, if history is any indication, will be sooner than they think in the scheme of things.
BT, I can’t say for sure as I am not that familiar with Addie either but I think she meant she lives in a Class B motorhome, they are built to look like a van with a raised ceiling and have a shower, toilet and (small) kitchen along with a small couch that converts into a bed, an electric generator and means to store grey water and sewage until it can be dumped at an RV shop. I doubt she is living in a Dodge Caravan or similar vehicle. Assuming that is the case, with the travel required for porn nowadays with some scenes in the LA area, others in San Francisco (especially for a BDSM performer like Addie), Florida, Vegas or Phoenix living in a motorhome can actually save on airfare and hotel bills, the biggest disadvantage for her is there isn’t enough room to swing a cane or whip when her BF or fuck of the night wants it. A Class B motorhome doesn’t use much more gas than a full-size truck or normal van so that bill isn’t ridiculous like it would be with a larger traditional Class A or C motorhome (I used to own a Class A, I got about seven miles to the gallon, at $1.00 a gallon a fill-up was well over $100, with gas prices now it would closer to $250-$275. She can also rent a pad at a motorhome park whenever and whereever she needs it at $20-$30 a night and not pay $2000 plus a month for an apartment that she will only sleep in a few days a month anyway plus $100 a night for a hotel room when she isn’t in LA or SF.
Jilted, that is definitely NOT an acceptable sample. IMO (and I may be talking out my ass here but I haven’t let that stop me before so why should it now) the tests need to be performed separately so it is possible to know which orifice is infected with a VD. I don’t even know if dipping anal and mouth samples in urine would contaminate it enough to register a result even if there were an infection there, the volume of urine could dilute the VD off of the mouth and ass samples enough where it would not be concentrated enough to register. Even if it did, the amount probably could not be verified to find out how far along the VD infection is, complicating attempts to ascertain how long the VD has been active in a person’s body (that may only be important with HIV — I don’t know but I do know Sharon Mitchell claimed to be able to roughly estimate how long someone had been infected by their blood count).
Speaking of “Dr.” Mitch, I wonder how she is doing nowadays without a job and likely having to sponge off of her husband. The only real skill she has now is phlebotomy (I don’t think she could even do MILF scenes at her age) and that pays $15 an hour maximum (about $30K annually), far from the $90K she made at AIM.

Well Jilted you asked me if I ever went to CET the answer is yes, but since they no longer have the same staff I’ve changed to TTS. CET seems to focus on Dr Maio but does he really exist?
