Sex workers ask ‘Who the hell made Ashley Sinclair pope?’

So, every one in a while I hop over to the Twitter feed of cam girl and erstwhile porn starlet Ashley Sinclair when I need a good laugh. Not at the stuff she tweets, which is often horrible — like her defense of The Confederacy and slavery as a defensible “state right”, among other remarks widely perceived as racist — but at her astounding inability to “judge the room”, as it were.

This weekend, Ashley decided to do the adult industry a friggin’ service and tweet a jeremiad detailing her rules regarding who is and isn’t a sex worker.

In other words, fuck all you ho’s; you’re doomed, and moreover, your struggle against stigma, oppression and violence is hurting little noble ME right in my Stars and Bars pocketbook!

As I scrolled through this clusterfuck, and the angry responses from sex workers of ALL shades, two quotations came to mind.

The first, from Camille Paglia, appeared in a piece for Maccleans.ca a few years back:

My wing of feminism—the pro-sex wing—was silenced. I was practically lynched for endorsing The Rolling Stones. Susan Faludi is still saying I’m not a feminist. Who made her pope?

~ Camille Paglia on Rob Ford, Rihanna and rape culture

The second is an old adage, “Those who stand alone, fall alone”

This latter quotation seems to take its cue from Ecclesiastes 4:10: “For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!”

But Ashley Sinclair doesn’t give a shit.

Ashley Sinclair (right) totally not doing sex work

Doubling down

Neither adult performers nor other sex workers found a lot to like in Sinclair’s manifesto.  Now, a sane individual, or one who isn’t selfish trash, might take stock of the outrage her words had provoked from the very people she was addressing. But, then again, this is Ashley Sinclair.

I think it says a lot when the crux of someone’s argument, again and again, is “get over it, move on, and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, don’t fuck up my hustle.”

Forget about rights, dignity, suffering, solidarity, ethics, or reason . . . to human cash register Ashley Sinclair it’s all a matter of not wanting others to inconvenience her.

With her latest Twitter tirade, it would appear that Ashley Sinclair has traded in one pointy hat…

…for another.

Happy Easter, everyone.
