Sex Tech: The Future of Erotica and Intimacy

By Lee Menarde

The following line is not the plot of a 1970’s cheap Erotic/Sci-Fi movie, it’s a news headline published in the British newspaper Mirror on January 6, 2016:

“Sex robots could be the biggest trend of 2016 as more lonely humans seek mechanical companions.”

Sex robots are becoming more realistic looking, their level of artificial intelligence is constantly increasing, making them more capable of interacting with humans, and their prices are going down, meaning more people can afford to purchase them and even fall in love with them. Dr. Helen Driscoll, a leading authority on the psychology of sex and relationships, commented:

“’Sex tech is advancing at a fast pace.

Robotic, interactive, motion-sensing technology is likely to become more and more central to the sex industry in the next few years.

We tend to think about issues like virtual reality and robotic sex within the context of current norms, but if we think back to the social norms about sex that existed 100 years ago, it is obvious that they have changed rapidly and radically.

As virtual reality becomes more realistic and immersive and is able to mimic and even improve on the experience of sex with a human partner, it is conceivable that some will choose this in preference to sex with a less than perfect human being.

People may also begin to fall in love with their virtual reality partners.”

Dr. Driscoll suggests the term “Robophilia” to describe the phenomenon of human/sex robot love relationship, and speculates it could become normal in the future as attitudes evolve with technology.

Artificial intelligence researcher Dr. David Levy is another expert who has done an extensive research on sex tech. According to Dr. Levy:

“People could be marrying robots, and consummating their vows, by 2050.

Although it might not appeal at first, once you have a story like “I had sex with a robot, and it was great” appear some place like Cosmo magazine, I’d expect many people to jump on the bandwagon.”

It’s interesting to observe how Dr. Levy emphasizes on the importance of media propaganda in normalizing robophilia. He stresses that love and sex with robots are inevitable.

Dr. Ian Pearson is another expert who is also convinced that in the future, human/robot sex overtakes human/human sex.

In a report produced for online sex shop Bondara, Dr. Pearson wrote:

“By 2030, most people will have some form of virtual sex as casually as they browse porn today. By 2035, the majority of people will own sex toys that interact with virtual reality sex. We will start to see some forms of robot sex appearing in high-income, very wealthy households as soon as 2025. We will start to see robot sex overtaking human-human in 2050. Leisure spending could grow by a factor of five, and the sex market in 20 years could be three times bigger than today and seven times bigger by 2050.

Dr. Pearson added:

“Brothels and strip clubs will soon include robots and they will be a specific fetish for some people, as well as a potentially cheaper replacement for real-life interaction.”

It seems in the future world, no job and no occupation will be safe from robotics, even prostitution, the oldest profession in history.

Currently human/robot sex is on its way to overtake human/human sex in some countries, perhaps most notably Japan where under 40s population appears to be losing interest in conventional relationships. The Japanese government calls this a “Celibacy Syndrome”, part of a looming national catastrophe. The alarming fact is that Japan already has one of the world’s lowest birth rates and its population of 126 million is projected to plunge a further one-third by 2060 and the number of single people in Japan has reached a record high. A survey in 2011 found that 61% of men and 49% of women aged 18-34 were not in any kind of romantic relationship, a rise of almost 10% from five years earlier.  A survey in 2016 by the Japan Family Planning Association (JFPA) found that 45% of women aged 16-24 were not interested in or even despised sexual contact.  Aoyama, a sex and relationship expert in Japan explained:

“Many people are turning to “Pot Noodle Love”, an easy or instant gratification in the form of casual sex, and more are turning towards technological means of instant sexual gratification such as online porn, virtual-reality girlfriends and anime cartoons.”

Aoyama used one of her patients as an example, a 30 year old virgin who cannot get sexually aroused unless she watches female robots on a game similar to “Power Rangers”.

Rapid rise of sex tech has caused a great deal of concern about its negative implications. Senior researcher Dr. Kathleen Richardson is among a growing number of scientists who have called the development of sex robots a disturbing trend that needs to be halted:

“Sex robots seem to be a growing focus in the robotics industry and the models that they draw on, how they will look, what roles they would play, are very disturbing indeed.

We think that the creation of such robots will contribute to detrimental relationships between men and women, adults and children, men and men and women and women.”

Let’s hope such dire warnings won’t fall on deaf ears.

  1. Absolutely laughable.

The cost of materials alone will never make it so affordable that every strip club & brothel will have one. The clients who would most likely to really want one or the experience with them will do their best to destroy each one.

The cost of maintenance & replacing them will be not be cost effective. The strippers also have to tip out the house, the bouncers, the dj & house mom. It’s not like 99% of the strip clubs pay the dancers.

Even in legal brothels, the girls pay room & board, plus a good percentage of all money made to the house. NONE of them are costing the owner money to be there.

Sales can not be taught to robots, up selling can not be taught to robots. If a guy knows that he can pay $100 to get off at a strip club or brothel no matter what he wants cause they are all the same. There is no up sell without a great cost to the business too as in destroying the robot.

If the product is so affordable then why would he go to a strip club or brothel at all?

There are girls on cam now that sound & are on autopilot all the time. None of them really make much money. Men find them boring.

The type of guy after fucking one just to see what it is like will quickly become bored with it & want a real person. The ones who only want a robot so they can be as depraved & violent will still look for real people to hurt A guy who gets off on raping, beating up & robbing hookers will not spend money on a robot.

All robots will have recording devises So any & all violence with them & can show a pattern of such behaviors to be used in a court of law for when they do it to real people. History of destroying property to show violent tendencies is relevant in abuse cases.

  2. Interesting topic, however something bothers me about this post. Perhaps it is that I had to find my own link to the article(s) referenced, http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/sex-robots-could-biggest-trend-7127554 and others. Perhaps it’s because I found the Mirror’s articles easier reads. Perhaps it’s because it feels like the author here has taken someone else’s work and regurgitated it here without adding something meaningful to the story to make it worth calling his own. Actually, I think that’s it. I don’t know if he’s reached the threshold for fair use or not based on his paraphrased commentary, but I do know if I was one of the original three authors of the article I linked above, JEFF PARSONS, KIRSTIE MCCRUM, or DAVID WATKINSON, or authors of the other articles used, that actually spent the time tracking down and performing the interviews, I would not be happy with this reproduction of my work.

Although, to be fair, It may just be that I’m sick and tired of seeing Michael Payne in the Ass posting anything here that promotes his website of fake news, bigotry, plagiarism, and poorly written rip-offs.

  3. @Sam38g,

The only thing that’s absolutely laughable is your illusion of permanence, your assumption that everything will be the same 5 years or 10 years or 25 years from now. I don’t mean to be harbinger of bad news, but I gotta tell you nothing remains the same. I’ll give you some examples:

    – When Japanese cars were introduced to the American market, American automakers said to each other don’t worry, nobody’s gonna buy this junk here. Turns out people did buy that junk here.

    – When the VCR came to the market, pornographers told each other don’t worry, it can’t compete with our sleazy hole-in-the-wall XXX theaters. Turns out the VCR took over the market.

    – When MP3 files began circulating on the internet, music label bosses said to each other don’t worry, it can’t compete with our CDs. Turns out online sharing/digital piracy did more than just competing, it annihilated the music industry.

The lesson is never underestimate technological evolution. When technology changes, people’s habits, needs and perceptions change with it.

As for the cost, everything new is expensive whether it’s a TV set or a sex doll, but ultimately the market balances itself. 4 years ago when 4K Ultra HD TVs came out, their price was somewhere between $5000 to $7000. Today, you can buy one for $1000 to $1200.

However, I agree with you on one thing: Popularity of sex dolls raises many legal challenges and may increase the level of sex related crimes. An example, as you mentioned, is a psychopath who enjoys rape and murder, and once he gets bored playing his sick games with his doll, he may want to try the real thing. That’s why so many ethic advocates are warning of impending dangers of sex tech, but I don’t except those advocates can do much to stop this extremely profitable trend. What can I tell you, it’s a brave new world.

  4. @AmDazed,

You demonstrate how dumb you are every time you make a comment, but are you blind too? Apparently yes, otherwise how can you assume I wrote this piece? In my introductory note, I explained this piece is excerpt from an article written by a colleague of mine, I mentioned the author’s name in my note, provided a link to the full article and mentioned the author’s name again at the top of the piece. How did you miss that? What’s wrong with you? That’s right, I know what your major malfunction is, you’re dumb as a dog, and I’m sorry for insulting the dog.

At the beginning of this piece, the author mentions title of the article published in the British newspaper Mirror and provides date of publication too. The author’s attempt is to emphasize how strange it is to nowadays read a title like that as a news headline, after all, these used to be the science fiction stuff. Therefore, when you post a link to an article which is referred to in this piece with the mention of publication date, you’re not exactly solving a mathematical enigma, you’re just illustrating how dumb you are. The Mirror article quotes several researchers, each of those researchers have published their work independently, none of them has published his/her work exclusively for Mirror and apart from Mirror, tens of other outlets have quoted the same researchers, a simple Goggle search will reveal that. Do you know what “quote” means, you buffoon? Here is the definition of QUOTE according to Merriam-Webster dictionary:

    – To speak or write (a passage) from another usually with credit acknowledgment

It means in every article, every documentary and every presentation on sex tech, if there is a quote from for example Dr. Ian Pearson, the quote will be mentioned in the same words and the same sentences as INITIALLY used by Dr. Ian Pearson. That’s the definition of “quote”, you moron. So how come if Mirror quotes Dr. Pearson it’s called journalism, but if someone else uses the same quote with CREDIT ACKNOWLEDGEMENT then it’s called rip off? Never mind, I know the answer to that, the answer is you’re dumb, and I don’t have to teach you literature on a porn message board.

By the way, you dumb imbecile, nobody twists your arm and forces you to read anything I post on MikeSouth.com, my own web site or anywhere else. You can look away and spare me the headache of responding to you. In fact, I don’t even want to know you exist, let alone exchanging any words with you.

I hope you’re an illegal immigrant, that way, once President Trump takes over the office, you will be deported back to the hellhole you came from. And of course it would be better if you’re not an illegal immigrant, because then you must be a bleeding heart butt hurt libtard with nowhere to run. You’ll remain in Trump’s America and suffer good for 4, or perhaps 8 years. I’ll drink to that.

  5. Mike (South not Payne) – This response to AmDaze is exactly why, in my opinion, Mr. Payne should not have free reign to post here. Way too much vitriol, and the lack of enough self control to not lash out with personal attacks when someone disagrees. I’ve had my fill of him, and I have a pretty high tolerance for Internet BS.

  6. @Toby,

First, you don’t get to decide who should or shouldn’t post on this or any other web site, all you get to decide is what to read and what not to read, so your opinion is irrelevant.

Second, let me see if I get this right: If some anonymous troll calls me names such as asshole, bigot and rip off and I respond to that troll accordingly, does that makes me the villain? Is this yet another brilliant opinion of yours? Is this what they teach you in schools nowadays? No wonder the Western civilization is in decline. Forget your school doctrine and let me teach you something: Respect is a two way street, give a little, get a little. I’ll be respectful towards others as long as they’ll be respectful towards me. If/when someone insults me and calls me names, I’ll respond to them in the same manner. What goes around, comes around.

Lastly, the topic of this thread is not “Mischieving of Michael Payne”, the topic is sex tech and robotic technology. If you’ve got something to say on this specific topic, go ahead and throw in your two cents, otherwise stop derailing the thread by your bitching and whining and piss off. This is an adult forum, not your pathetic cry baby safe space.

  7. I read the article thinking we could have an interesting discussion about future sex toys and how they might impact relationships, and then I see the comments section……….

I will make one comment to Sam about cost…

Most new technology comes into the market at prices that are very high.. whether it is $1000 VCRs to $100 VHS cassettes to $4000 286 Dos computers. We can apply that to HD TVs from years ago, and TVs coming out now. I would think that if sex robots became something that was in demand enough, the price would become cheaper and cheaper…. like everything does.

  8. More of the same from you, condescending vitriol.

I was not deciding anything, simply expressing my opinion to Mike. He may do with it as he wishes.

  9. @Toby,

Let’s see what you’ve got to say:

Toby: I was not deciding anything, simply expressing my opinion to Mike. He may do with it as he wishes.

Mr. Payne: … And I told you your opinion is irrelevant, no one should cave in and give in to your pathetic little demands and censor the content on his/her web site because the world doesn’t revolve around you. If you don’t like reading my material, disagree with it or find it offensive, then simply don’t read it, you’re not obliged to do so. Instead, go find something to read that you like, agree with and don’t find offensive. Surely you won’t have any problem finding your favorite material on the vast cyber space.

I’ll ask you one more time: Stick to the discussion of topic of this thread. Don’t derail the thread. Stop being a pussified cuckold troll.

  10. Joe, the first VCRs available to consumers were over $2K in the mid 1970’s (the 3/4 inch JVC VCR which was the predecessor to the better known VHS which is a 1/2 inch version also invented by JVC — Japan Victor Corporation). It was not successful, it didn’t have any timer-based recording, you had to be there to record a program with it. There wasn’t a remote control for them. They were fifty pounds (good luck to women trying to move it while cleaning the top of the television it would have sat on) and the tapes were extremely expensive. There weren’t any pre-recorded tapes for them, it was strictly for recording something yourself (or a friend having one and recording something for you) and replaying it at another time. Cable television had not made it to very many cities by 1975-1976 when they were current technology so there wasn’t much for people to record for home use. Ironically they had much better picture quality than its replacement until well into VHS’s development. The 3/4 inch VCR was much more popular in the education field where universities and public school districts would record PBS educational programs and replay them in classrooms during the school day.

I think sex robots would follow a similar path to the VCR (other than they would not be used in K-12 education). They will be extremely expensive at first ($5K wouldn’t surprise me). As the manufacture of them would become cheaper and the technology improved the price would decrease, probably at a faster rate than the VCR did in the 70’s and early 80’s. I suspect within ten years of the sex robot’s introduction to the market they would be less than $500 new and in the box. I suspect they will have a pussy with an attachable dick that mounts inside of its pussy for female use so they can be sold to any adult willing and able to spend the cash. I suspect there will still be demand for a wife or husband, it will take a long time to make a robot feel as good as sex with a spouse or girl/boyfriend. I think they will be used similar to what masturbation is used for now, not to replace human interaction but to get sexual release when a person’s spouse or girl/boyfriend aren’t around. I won’t likely live to see this happen nor will Michael (Payne) who posted the above article (I base that on Michael’s posting comments about his Soviet persecution, that atrocity of a government fell in 1990, more than likely he was at least 16 when they persecuted him and I doubt it was for a short time from the comments he has made over the years so that would likely put him in his 50’s at minimum) but it wouldn’t surprise me to see sex robots happen assuming the world as we know it doesn’t end by 2050 or so. It would be nice if they also cooked and cleaned when a dick wasn’t in them or their dicks weren’t in women’s pussies.

  11. @MHarris127,

I agree with you my friend, the coming generation of sex robots will most likely be transsexual with an attachable/detachable dick. You and I may not be around to see them, but I have a feeling they’ll be more attractive than Bruce (Call Me Caitlyn) Jenner. 😉

As for my age, I’m 42. My encounter with the Soviet Union regime occurred in the early 1990’s, last days of the Empire. So long ago, yet so close.

  12. @MichaelPayne
I never assumed you wrote this piece, just that you posted it here. I am of the opinion that what pisses people off about other people is really what pisses people off about themselves… You say I’m Dumb and Blind; perhaps you can’t read very well and if so I apologize for your disability. And I stick with my opinions about your contributors writing. I also stick to this opinion: “I’m sick and tired of seeing Michael Payne in the Ass posting anything here that promotes his website of fake news, bigotry, plagiarism, and poorly written rip-offs.”

Also, not that is should matter one bit, I’m a white male, US born, and I can not be classified as a liberal nor a conservative, I think for myself. Strange that you would try to group me in because of my comments, because if I’m not with you I must be against you in every way. I say grow the fuck up. I hope nobody suffers under Trump, and it’s strange as his supporter you think democrats should and will suffer under Trump. If he is the man he claims to be then life will be terrific for all hard working law abiding American’s under Trump, and if you are hoping for something different then that is pretty shitty in my opinion. As a white male, with all the advantages I receive as such, and there are many, I am not afraid of any of the stupid shit many are obviously afraid of like Minorities, Immigrants, Peoples sexual preference and their Gender Identities. I believe that most white men, or any man, that need to demonize these groups need to practice what they preach and man up. If you are secure in your sexuality, other peoples sexuality shouldn’t matter to you. If you can’t find work, you need to work on yourself until you do, or create your own job. As long as you keep blaming others, including the government, for your failures, you will continue to fail. But just in case you can’t do it on your own, I hope the claimed greatest nation in the world, the US, will help make sure you, as well as all human’s living here in the US, can survive so you/they can keep on trying.

And I’m not saying that all this applies to you Mr. Payne in my ass, and I know that you didn’t specifically mention my race, but your inclusion of President Elect Trump and how it you hope he effect others along with many of your views here seam to mimic the “working class white man that voted for Trump”.

  13. Sorry, Michael. You were quite young when you were persecuted, then. I hope Stalin and his buddies that set the old Soviet system up are burning in Hell right now. I am glad you are out of there now, though. I don’t think Russia has changed much from the old Soviet Union days, they just have a duo running things now to get around their term limit clause in the Russian Constitution — Putin and Medvedev. They forgot to put a two term per lifetime clause in it, allowing them to switch offices back and forth between each other after they max out their current office. Putin was even the head of the fucking KGB during Soviet times — of course he is going to run things like it was back then as much as he can get away with.

For the record even some porn trannies are more “attractive” than Bruce “Caitlin Kartrashian” Jenner. I still don’t want to fuck one but I don’t know what is uglier, Bruce/”Cait” or Belladonna (and Belladonna isn’t a tranny unless she is post-op). I can make the same comment comparing Bruce/”Cait” and Bonnie Rotten. Belladonna and Bonnie Rotten are the two ugliest better-known recent performers (Bonnie would have had a better chance without those tattoos all over her body, her face isn’t that bad, I just plain feel sorry for Belladonna). I wonder if Bruce/”Cait” will show up in a Jim Powers or Kink.com tranny scene soon. He certainly won’t get any in the general population — whether he gets his dick and balls cut off and a pussy drilled into his pelvis or not.

I just hope those sex robots cook and clean, too. Even $500 for a sex toy that doesn’t have more practical uses is a lot of cash. Maybe they will have some type of mechanism to stroke the dick/pussy so it is easier for the person using it to get off, though — less work for him/her.
